Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to purchase a meal plan?

Yes! It's a great value and it is Berea College’s policy that all designated Campus Residents purchase a meal plan each semester. Students can choose which plan best fits their schedule and lifestyle.

Although there are no restrictions on how times per day you can enter the Mountaineer Dining Hall, all Meal Plan participants are required to bring their card for a swipe each time they enter.

If I have "unlimited swipes", why do I need to swipe my card each time I come into the Mountaineer dining hall?

Swiping your card allows us to keep track of how many people are coming into the dining hall. By keeping track of this, it helps us better project how much labor we need to utilize and at what time. Our system provides us with 15 minute counts, or how many swipes we have every 15 minutes. We are better able to project labor requirements to help make sure our schedules are managed to peak times of service. It also help us to better project how much food will be needed to be produced during that amount of time. This allows us to control waste, which keeps costs down for you and try to keep fresher food out during slow periods and reduce wait times during peak service times.

Swiping cards also helps us make sure people coming into the dining hall are meal plan participants.

What are Flex Dollars?

Flex Dollars are cash values included in all meal plans. They work like a pre-paid debit card with funds kept on your student ID card. Flex Dollars may be used at the Wholly Habaneros Cafe or the Mountaineer Dining Hall. Students and/or their parents may purchase additional Flex Dollars at any time through the BC Dining Office – come by and see Connie Middleton or call her at (859) 985-3548. Flex Dollars may also be purchased on our website!

Do Flex Dollars carry over from year to year?

They are carried over from the fall to the spring when a new meal plan is purchased in the spring. They are not carried over from year to year.

Do Block Meals carry over from semester to semester?

Unused voluntary Block meals (for staff, faculty and commuting students) carry over from semester to semester, and expire on August 1st each year.

Can I change my meal plan if it does not fit my needs?

Yes! Changing to a  meal plan that includes more flex dollars and extra meals for guests can be done during the first 10 days of the semester. Changing to Gold or Platinum plan is possible at any time during the semester. All other requests for changes must be made at the Residential Life Office located on the third floor of the Woods-Penn building.

If I'm not a Resident Hall Student, where do I buy my meal plan?

If you live off-campus, you can purchase a traditional meal plan through Connie Middleton in the BC Dining offices in the Mountaineer Dining Hall (Alumni Building), or purchase a plan on our website at the "Shop Now" tab.  We have also designed special meal plans just for Faculty, Staff, and Commuters (see block meal plans), which can also be purchased on our website.

Important Info

Selection of a Campus Dining Services meal plan entitles you to a meal card (your campus ID card) which allows you purchasing power equivalent to the plan you have selected.  Here is how it works: with each meal plan, you receive Berea Bucks (points) which can be used to purchase meals for yourself, your family, or friends in either Mountaineer Dining or the Crossroads Café. Unused Flex Dollars will carry over from Fall to Spring semesters.

All students on Meal Plans are required to bring their meal cards to each meal and swipe in each time they enter the Dining Hall.

Lost or Stolen Meal Cards (ID's)

Lost or stolen meal cards can be replaced. Should this happen to you, please go to the Residential Life office to get a new card. In the event that you cannot get a new card before you come in for a meal, please bring something with your student ID number on it and we will be glad to accept it until you get a new card.

Carry Out Meals

If you are feeling under the weather and must take out your meal, just present your ID to our cashier and let them know you need a sick meal. If you are too ill to come to the dining hall yourself, ask a friend or RA to bring your ID and they can pick it up for you. We will make every effort to accommodate religious requests, as well.

Dietary Needs

Our Campus Dining Services Program can accommodate your special dietary requirements. For more information, please don’t hesitate to contact our Executive Chef John Valdez. Vegetarian and vegan options are available daily – look for the item identifiers at meals.

Seconds Policy

You never have to be too shy to ask for seconds in the Mountaineer Dining Hall. Our generous policy allows for a second helping of many menu favorites. All you have to do is ask!
